Estuaries are among the most productive and dynamic ecosystems on Earth and have long served as spaces where humans build place-based traditions through fishing and shellfishing. Centering these interactions as a multidimensional experience, this talk follows the relationships between people and oysters from harvest to habitat, including the collection, consumption, and compilation of oysters into middens and mounds. Further, this talk will discuss the relevance of coastal archaeological sites and archaeological data in contemporary estuary management.
